In October 2006, with the help of PLC volunteer Jerry King, a group of fifth grade students at Weare Middle School began the process of raising 100 Atlantic Salmon in their classroom through US Fish and Wildlife’s Adopt-A-Salmon program. The program, which is funded and supported by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as well as the New England Salmon Association, brings together schools and local conservation organizations to help increase understanding of the importance of our waters.
The PLC provided all necessary equipment as well as a volunteer liaison to assist the classroom teacher throughout the eight month process.
On the morning of May 7th,2007 after months of hopeful waiting and daily care, the big day finally came – the day when the students would release their small fish back into natural waters. The fry were handed out to the students who, with shouts of farewell and encouragement, released them into the Piscataquog River, watching excitedly as the tiny fish swam down river and out of sight.
Clint Davis, an avid fly-fisherman, lives in New Boston and is a 2007 graduate of The Derryfield School in Manchester. During his senior year Clint completed an Independent Senior Project with PLC focusing on protecting and preserving water quality in the Piscataquog Region.
